Unique route in Leeuwarden
What city has such a thing: just walk over poems. Leeuwarden offers a unique collection of poems in stone. Walking through the streets of the city center, contemplating stanzas and phrases from local, but also nationally known poets and writers. Stop for a moment, take in the surroundings and take in the offered text. Most of the now 52 stones can be found in the historic city center. You can walk the Poetry Route in different ways. Download the free App for your mobile phone or print the map. The Poetry Route Leeuwarden also includes a handy route book that guides you through all the poems. This booklet is available at the Afûk, Historisch Centrum Leeuwarden, Boekhandel van der Velde and the VVV shop.
Collection of poems in stone
Since the first series of ten poems, delivered in September 1993 on the occasion of the farewell of mr. G.J. te Loo as mayor of Leeuwarden, a number of stones are added to this unique route every year. For the first poetry tableaux we made a choice from older, existing work and newly written Frisian and Dutch poems. These came from writers who had lived or still lived in Leeuwarden. Later poets were also approached who did not have a direct relationship with Leeuwarden. However, the aim remains to have at least half of new poems written and the remainder to appeal to previously published work.
